On October 11th, CSI held its first symposium to celebrate the research and innovation originating from the Chicano Studies Institute community. The event was attended by undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and administration, all with the goal of uplifting our UCSB Latina/o/x members. Some of the highlights included:
-
An introductory welcome by Executive Vice Chancellor, Dr. David Marshall, AVC of Teaching and Learning, Linda Adler-Kassner, and AVC for Academic Personnel, Dana Mastro.
-
A presentation by Dr. Malaphone Phommasa about the origins of the center for Opening New Doors to Accelerating Success (ONDAS), which was built to provide historically underrepresented, low-income and first gen undergraduates with a variety of resources on campus.
-
Presentations by Dr. Inés Casillas and Dr. Sara Anderson about $3million in funding for a new Center for Equitable Environmental Sciences (CEES), created to to help escort underrepresented undergraduates and prospective transfers into STEM majors and careers.
-
A presentation by Dr. Adanari Zarate about the program in Educational eXcellence and Inclusion Training Opportunities (ÉXITO) which prepares undergraduate ethnic studies majors to enroll in teacher credential programs for future placement as high school ethnic studies teachers in California.
-
A research presentation by Dr. Rebeca Mireles-Rios about the educational expectations of Latina/o students and the connection to parent and teacher support as they navigate the university experience.
These are only a few of the many exciting projects that are taking place with the support of CSI. At CSI, our aim is to help policy makers, fellow researchers, educators, service providers and the interested public better understand cultural and social justice issues engaged by U.S. Latina/o/x and Latin American communities. By coming together to celebrate this work, we hope to elevate and amplify the important work being done at UCSB so that we can bring even more people into our HSI network!
