Mattanjah de Vries

Dr. de Vries received his Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Amsterdam in 1980. After a four-year tenure as a Research Associate at UCSB, he joined the IBM Almaden Research Laboratory as a Research Staff member, where he won three awards for outstanding innovation and technical achievement. In 1997, he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since September 2000, Dr. de Vries has been a Professor of Physical Chemistry at UCSB, focusing on laser spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, photochemistry, and the UV photodynamics of DNA. His work also encompasses prebiotic chemistry, archaeometry, cultural heritage, and the intersection of art and archaeology. Dr. de Vries is a Humboldt Fellow (2003) and an AAAS Fellow (2008).
