Sarah Roberts

Assistant Professor of Education

Background: Sarah Roberts is an assistant professor of mathematics education in the Department of Education. She earned her B.A., M.A., and teaching credential from Stanford University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before pursuing her Ph.D., she taught middle and high school math and science in the Bay Area for several years.

Research Interests:

• Equity in P-20 education
• Mathematics education in K-12
• Postsecondary mathematics
• Higher education research

Research Focus: Professor Roberts’ research emphasizes equity throughout the P-20 education continuum, particularly in K-12 mathematics. Her work is inspired by her experiences as a middle and high school math and science teacher in public schools and her commitment to fostering equitable classrooms and schools. Over time, her research interests have expanded to include postsecondary mathematics and higher education.

Current Research Projects:

1. NSF CAREER Project: Understanding the Routinization of Mathematics Language Routines in Middle and High Schools

   • Explores the use of mathematics language routines by teachers.
   • Develops a professional development model to enhance teacher learning.
   • Centers on the enactment of mathematics language routines (MLRs) in data science.

2. CPM Extensive Research Grant Project

   • Investigates how in-service high school mathematics teachers can better support bilingual learners.
   • Focuses on five principles for effective bilingual mathematics instruction and routines.

3. Title V Grant, ÉXITO

   • Aims to prepare credentialed ethnic studies teachers for California high schools.
   • Involves qualitative evaluation using surveys and interviews to assess the program's effectiveness.
